vessels improve the reliability and profitability of windfarms
Like any other machine,
also wind turbines need maintenance from time to time. But the task of maintaining
wind turbines situated up to 50 nm off the coast at an (obviously) windy area,
can prove to be rather demanding. Nine EU countries are
already hosting offshore wind farms, with United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands
accounting for the majority - about 85 % of the EU total.1
- Most of the service
vessels currently used for transfer to the turbines are slow-moving monohull
boats, which are not built for stormy conditions, says Pauli Immonen, Managing Director of the Finnish company Mobimar Ltd. We wanted to change that, he adds.
The
vigorous movements caused by high sea waves not only make service personnel sea
sick aboard the boats - also a potentially dangerous situation is faced when
approaching the wind turbine. The waves can forcefully hurl the boat against
the base of the turbine or suddenly pull it away just as the passengers are
about to disembark. When the transit to or from the wind turbines is dependant
on the weather, the service personnel will also have to be prepared to stay
overnight or even a longer period of time at a wind mill.
Keeping
these challenges in mind, Mobimar developed a trimaran vessel especially suitable
for service operations at offshore wind farms. The bow has a magnet, which allows
the vessel to be easily attached to the wind turbine without risking injuries
to people or property. For this unique attachment system the company applied a
patent. Furthermore, the three hulls ensure that the Mobimar 16 Wind operates safe and stable even during heavier sea
conditions. This makes for a more comfortable transfer, which is not limited by
rough weather. As a result, operation downtime can be reduced and the profitability
improved.
